David Russell Lee (born 18 June 1964) is an English DJ and house music producer, formerly known by the stage name Joey Negro (pronounced /nɛɡroʊ/), which he retired in July 2020 following the George Floyd protests. He has released music under a variety of pseudonyms, including Jakatta, Doug Willis, Raven Maize, Sessomatto as well as being part of The Sunburst Band. Lee has scored a number of top 40 hits, among them “American Dream”, “So Lonely” and “My Vision”, all under the name Jakatta.

DJ Funkshion – Talkin About 5 (Prelude Records, New York, USA)

Prelude Records was a New York-based independent record label that was active from 1976 to 1986. At one time, François Kevorkian held an A&R position at Prelude. The label’s owner was Marvin Schlachter. Prelude was first launched in 1976, renamed from Pye International Records, a US division of UK-based Pye Records which had begun in 1974. The name was derived from the music group Prelude, which recorded for Pye at the time.

As disco music declined, Prelude was one of the few disco labels to survive its demise. In 1981 they pioneered the mastermix. with Shep Pettibone’s “Kiss Mastermix 2×12”. Having recruited Kevorkian, the label was able to focus on remixes; to change up an existing song by altering it slightly.

Fat Freddy’s Drop is a New Zealand seven-piece band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of Dub, Reggae, Soul, Jazz, Rhythm and Blues and Techno. Originally a jam band formed in the late 1990s by musicians from other bands in Wellington, Fat Freddy’s Drop gradually became its members’ sole focus.

Band members continued playing with their other respective groups – The Black Seeds, TrinityRoots, Bongmaster and others – for much of their 20-year career. Fat Freddy’s Drop are known for their improvised live performances. Songs on their studio albums are versions refined over years of playing them live in New Zealand and on tour abroad.

Nile Gregory Rodgers Jr. (born September 19, 1952) is an American guitarist, singer-songwriter, record producer, and arranger.

The co-founder of Chic, Rodgers has written, produced and performed on albums that have cumulatively sold more than 500 million units and 75 million singles worldwide.

He is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a three-time Grammy Award-winner, and the chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Known for his “chucking” guitar style, Rolling Stone wrote in 2014 that “the full scope of Nile Rodgers’ career is still hard to fathom“.

DJ Funkshion Tributes – Larry Levan

Larry Levan was the first superstar DJ. The first to really convince the world that there was more to DJing than just playing one record after another.

For 10 years from 1977 to 1987, Levan was the star attraction at New York’s legendary Paradise Garage, writing himself into clubbing lore with swashbuckling DJ sets that took in minimal underground disco, funky rock, dub and synth-pop, which foreshadowed the house music revolution.
